Mary Kay Place

Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mary Kay Place moved to Los Angeles upon her graduation from the University of Tulsa. After working as an assistant to the head writers on Norman Lear's Maude, she began writing (with Linda Bloodworth) for numerous television series, including - The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Phyllis and M*A *S*H, for which she received a 1973 Emmy nomination.

Place first achieved national notice and won the Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her critically acclaimed portrayal of would be country singer Loretta Haggers on the hit comedy series, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. She also wrote more than 75 songs for her character and recorded three albums on Columbia Records, including the Grammy nominated Tonite At the Capri Lounge.

Her numerous feature film credits include: Bound for Glory, More American Graffiti; Martin Scorsese's New York, New York; Private Benjamin; Starting Over, Modem Problems; Waltz Across Texas; Explorers; Smooth Talk; The Big Chill; Samantha; Bright Angel; Captain Ron; Alexander Payne's Citizen Ruth; Manny and Lo (for which she received a Best Supporting Actress nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards); Francis Ford Coppola's The Rainmaker, John Waters' Pecker, Lisa Kruger's Committed; Girl, Interrupted; the critically acclaimed Being John Malkovich and My First Mister. Upcoming films include Sweet Home Alabama and The Safety of Objects.

Place frequently works as a director in television, as well, on such series as Baby Boom, Dream On, Arliss and Friends, among others.
