In 1980, Barry launched his career by writing and directing The Chain Reaction, a low-budget action thriller which Warner Brothers acquired the for worldwide distribution at Cannes. His career has been going non-stop ever since.

Before relocating to Los Angeles, Barry amassed numerous directing credits in Australia, including the award-winning mini-series Body Surfer (which won AFI Actor of the Year awards and visual style awards), Ring of Scorpio, and Whose Baby. Barry also made several thrillers for television set in Australia, including Crime Broker, with Jacqueline Bisset; The Seventh Floor, with Brooke Shields; and Blackwater Trail with Judd Nelson. He then went on to make Wrangler, a western set in the outback.

Barry shifted gears in 1997 with the quirky kid's comedy Joey. His U.S. affiliation started with offshore productions in Australia and Asia for movies including the retro science-fiction Robo-Warrior and the television series Time Trax.

In 1998, Barry made The Christmas Wish for CBS, with Debbie Reynolds and Neil Patrick Harris, which rated over a 26 share, becoming one of the highest performers of the season. He also directed the television movie Inferno, which earned a high rating for UPN and repeated to even higher ratings twelve weeks after its initial screening. Barry also wrote and directed the sci-fi comic-strip thriller Airtight and has directed episodes of CBS's Early Edition and Sci-Fi's Farscape.

In 2000, Barry had the distinction to work with the late Jason Robards on his last picture Going Home. He then went on to direct Flight of the Reindeer, with Beau Bridges and Richard Thomas.
