Like Jackie Chan, Anita Mui began her career as a child, turning professional at the age of 7 and performing Chinese Opera and pop songs in nightclubs and restaurants. By the time she was 18, she had begun her recording career, winning recognition and awards including the New Talent Singing Contest in 1982. In 1985, she released her international hit album Bad Girl — and became noted for her charismatic dancing and inventive live performances. In 1988, she was invited to sing in the opening ceremony at the Seoul Olympics. She continues to sing and perform but in the 90s also became a businesswoman, starting the restaurant Orient Star, Hong Kong's version of Planet Hollywood, of which Jackie Chan is also an owner.
Anita Mui made her feature film debut in Behind the Yellow Line in 1985 and won Hong Kong's Best Supporting Actress Award for her efforts. She went on to become a major feature film star, garnering the Golden Horse Best Actress Award in 1987 for Rouge. In 1991, she was nominated for Best Actress at the Tokyo International Film Festival for Au Revoir. Mon Amour. More recently, she has starred in Jet Li's The Enforcer, Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Star, Who's The Man, Who's The Woman and Eighteen Springs.
