Xavier Marton, the head of the toy department at the Grands Magasins du Louvre, a model train specialist, visits M to say that he thinks he wife wants to poison him, but leaves while M is out of the room. Later in the day the man's wife, Gisèle Marton, also visits M, to tell her side of the story, which is that her husband is having delusions. Marton comes the next day, and agrees to have another examination with a psychiatrist. But he warns M that if she poisons him, he'll shoot her before he dies. Meanwhile, M has had both of them investigated, and finds that Gisèle's sister, Jenny, is living with them, and that Marton is apparently enamored of her. Gisèle, on the other hand, is apparently the lover of her employer, M. Harris. M has the house watched during the night, and by morning Marton is dead, accidentally poisoned by Jenny, when Gisèle switched her cup of tea with her husband's. He had poisoned his own, with enough to make him sick, but not to kill him. Jenny thought he hadn't the nerve, so she added the poison to kill her sister.

Best old fashioned Detective "Cozy" in it's class,

Maigret episodes are as long as a regular movie. Wonderful settings, engaging mysteries and a detective that has empathy for those just a toe over the line. Violence is replaced by subtle, likeable characters.

Light the fireplace, curl up in your favorite chair and prepare to be delighted.

Downside? They are in french with subtitles, and come in European PAL format. We had previously bought a PAL international DVD player from Fry's electronics for about $150 that plays formats from 50 nations. We bought that because of an English "Cozy" detective series called Pie In The Sky that in order to get 5 seasons in one nice package, comes in PAL format. Also highly recomended.

If you liked Poirot or Ms. Marple series, you'll love this. We think it's actually better.

Charming, Entertaining, Superb in Every Way...

.
The French series of Maigret was made between 1998-2003 in coöperation with Belgian and Czech national televisions.
Shot on film--(not video tape)--each episode is a superb recreation of 1950s France and Belgium.
Great care was taken with the set design, locale, trains and autos, costumes, etc.
Excellent original sound track music by maître Laurent Petitgirard.

Bruno Crémer makes the perfect Maigret--a descendant of Edgar Poe's C. Auguste Dupin.

Each episode lasts approximately :90mins and is on an individual DVD.
These sets have only recently been made available on Amazon.USA.

All DVDs Region 2 playable on universal DVD player with English subtitles.

Great Production

This production doesn't disappoint. Region 2 and PAL format means a region-free PAL/NTSC player is required but easily available. French with English subtitles allow you to practice your French without missing any of the dialogue. September 20, 2008
