Conversaciones Con Mama (2003)

Mamá tiene ochenta y dos años y su hijo Jaime, cincuenta. Ambos viven en mundos muy diferentes. Jaime tiene mujer, dos hijos, una hermosa casa, dos autos y una suegra que atender. Mamá se las arregla sola y sobrelleva su vejez con la misma dignidad con que ha llevado toda su vida. Pero un día ocurre lo inesperado; la empresa para la que trabaja Jaime lo deja en la calle por razones de ajuste. La lamentable situación lo lleva a decisiones drásticas. Jaime y su mujer son los dueños del departamento donde vive Mamá. Tendrán que pedirle a Mama que deje el departamento para poderlo vender, solo que cuando Jaime llega a darle las malas noticias a su madre esta le tiene a el una sorpresa mas grande. Mom is eighty-two years old and her son Jaime is fifty. They live in completely different worlds. Jaime is married, has two children, a beautiful house, two cars and a mother-in-law to attend to. Mom manages on her own and endures her old age with the same dignity with which she has lived her entire life. Unexpectedly, the company for which Jaime works downsizes and lays him off. His regrettable situation forces him to make drastic decisions because he can no longer support his lifestyle. Jaime and Dorita, his wife, own the apartment where Mom lives. Jaime soon realizes that he has no way out but to sell his Mom’s apartment. When Jaime goes to tell his mother that he has no choice but to sell the apartment, Mom has a bigger surprise waiting for him.

***1/2 2004. Written and directed by Argentine director Santiago Carlos Oves. Jaime has just lost his job. Now his wife wants him to tell his mother to leave the apartment she lives in so that they can sell it. So Jaime will spend more and more time with his mother, talking about her, about the past and about her new boy-friend who's 69 years old. I liked a lot this bittersweet comedy coming from Argentina. The performance of veteran actress China Zorrilla and Eduardo Son of the Bride Blanco is gorgeous. As the topic of the film is universal, you'll surely appreciate two or three well-observed truths about our modern societies. Recommended. October 7, 2008
